It is often said, “There are no dumb questions”. When it comes to gardening, that is also true! So we will start off with a question many new gardeners have, but are afraid to ask! Here goes!
Not so dumb question:
What is the difference between an annual plant and a perennial plant?
Answer:
If you think back to high school, do you remember how you got your annual yearbook every year? Same with plants! The plants that you buy every spring to add instant color to your landscape are annuals. They will provide you with great color through the season, often well into fall. But once the first frost hits, they will begin to die, dying completely by the time winter comes. Next spring you have to buy them again.
Perennial plants growing in your yard will start to show shoots at the beginning of spring. They also provide great color all through the season. They will appear to “die” as it gets cold but they are really just going dormant and will be ready to start growing again when the temperatures dictate they should!
Do you have a question about gardening that you feel is too “dumb” to ask? Go ahead ask! We won’t judge and we will try to answer the question for you!
